Der Umgang mit Kriminalität auf parteipolitischer Ebene. Eine Auswertung von Wahlprogrammen (German)

How do Political Parties handle Crime? An Evaluation of Election Programs in Germany

Helmut Kury and Jördis Schüssler

Based on empirical evidence, the article discusses the development of political
parties‘ discourse on the issue of crime in Germany. Since the early 2000s, there has been a clear shift towards more sanction-oriented reactions and solution patterns for dealing with delinquent behaviour at the level of national party politics. In particular, scientific research findings regarding the issues of crime are less considered. Instead, political parties are more and more media-oriented. Moreover, federal election programs of the major parties represented in the German parliament were analysed in terms of recommendations for crime prevention. Most notably, a turn to more punitive forms of reaction can be affirmed for the conservative parties.

Eine Tyrannei der Öffentlichkeit. Drei Schritte der subjektiven Aneignung therapeutischer Narrative (German)

The Fall of Private Man. Three Steps for Acquiring Therapy Narratives

Martin Harbusch

This article aims to show the consequences that contact with therapy settings in a psychological frame and/or supervision has for people’s biographical narratives. To this end, it references the sociology of knowledge to offer an interpretive approach to mental disorders based on empirical analyses of interviews with help-seekers. The analysis shows that interviewees acquire therapy narratives in three steps that lead to (self-) alienated forms of self-perception as well as self-presentation. In these three steps, the complex and hard-fought relationship between public and private ideas of the self are of central relevance for therapy narratives. At the center of these stories, we can find the intimization of public relations and, at the same time, the simultaneous dominance of public content for the construction of privacy.

Pädagogische Strafe oder strafende Pädagogik? Eine qualitative Bestimmung von Krisenursachen in Jugendstrafsystemen am Beispiel Kolumbiens (German)

Pedagogical Punishment or punitive Pedagogy? A qualitative determination of crisis causes for the Colombian juvenile justice system

Markus Ciesielski

The multiple legal requirements of modern youth justice systems have a crisis potential, which is examined here in the case of the Colombian youth justice system. The initial observation regarding this system is that its legal practice does not fulfill its own requirements. Since research is limited, Bourdieu’s field term and evidence from 27 in-depth interviews conducted in three different Colombian juvenile courts are used to reconstruct the actor’s practices in the legal proceeding. The central outcome is that the different legal requirements condition among each other and the analysis of actions within judicial institutions can be considered an auspicious approach to identify the complex causes of the crisis of modern youth justice systems.

Discussion Paper

Der Ausnahmezustand als rechtssoziologische Analyse. Ein Debattenbeitrag (German)

The state of exception as a sociological analysis of the law. A contribution to the debate on the state of exception in Germany

Anne-Marlen Engler

The article examines the state of emergency as a sociological analysis category. The author criticizes jurisprudential publications that define the exception to law as a generalizable structural feature of legal sociology in criminology without considering its normative implications.

Drugs and Digital Technologies

Call for Abstracts for a special issue of the KrimJ

Illicit drug markets are undergoing a significant transformation: digital technologies have a profound influence on how illicit drugs are accessed, and they have also changed information- sharing about drugs. In addition, the proliferation of information and communication technologies has changed law enforcement activity. Digitalisation also comes with rapid changes in communicative environments across time and geographic location. While online forums and other internet resources have massively increased the amount of available information and discourse on psychoactive substances for more than two decades, mobile phones, encrypted platforms, cryptocurrencies, social media and messaging applications have recently diversified the ways in which illicit drugs are distributed. This diversity includes hybrid forms of distribution, e.g. using social media applications to make physical appointments.
